St. Paul lies in the southern tier of Madison County, where the Boston Mountains drop down toward the Kings River. The community is small and remote, but the Kings River put-in at St. Paul is one of the most popular access points for one of Arkansas's most beloved floating rivers, drawing paddlers from all over the state and beyond.
Kings River: The Kings is one of the most pristine free-flowing rivers in the Ozarks. It runs clear and cold through limestone bluffs, hardwood forest, and quiet farm country, and the St. Paul put-in offers some of the most scenic floating in the state. Spring and early summer are peak season, but the river is worth visiting anytime conditions allow.
The community: St. Paul itself is a small settlement, but the area around it has a strong outdoor and conservation culture. Several outfitters serve paddlers and anglers, and there are a handful of vacation cabins and bed-and-breakfasts catering to visitors. The Boston Mountain hardwood forests stretch out on three sides, making this excellent country for hiking, hunting, and quiet exploration.
Things to do: Float trips on the Kings River are the headline activity, but the surrounding country has a lot more to offer — including some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in Arkansas, several hiking and ATV trails in the Ozark National Forest, and miles of scenic backroads. The drive in and out of St. Paul along Highway 16 is itself one of the prettier mountain drives in the state.
For new residents: Living in St. Paul means accepting some real trade-offs — longer drives for services, limited internet in some pockets, and winter weather that can make the mountain roads tricky. In exchange, you get scenery, solitude, and one of the prettiest stretches of river country in Arkansas. Properties tend to be larger acreage, often with timber, water, or both.
