The Best Outdoor Activities in Madison County, Arkansas

Sponsored

Madison County, Arkansas occupies a sweet spot in the Ozarks — north of the Boston Mountains, east of the Northwest Arkansas metro, and south of the Buffalo National River. The result is a county packed with rivers, ridges, forests, and quiet country roads that locals have known about for generations and that out-of-state visitors are finally starting to discover. If you're planning a weekend in Madison County or you just moved in and want to know where to start, here are the outdoor activities that residents recommend first.

Float the Kings River

The Kings River is one of the clearest, prettiest free-flowing rivers in Arkansas. It rises in the southern part of Madison County and winds north through limestone bluffs, hardwood forest, and quiet farm country toward Table Rock Lake. The most popular put-in for Madison County paddlers is near St. Paul, and from there you can plan trips of a few hours up to multi-day expeditions. Spring and early summer are peak season, when water levels are high and the dogwoods are blooming on the bluffs. By late summer the river can get low enough that you'll be dragging your canoe in some stretches — which has its own appeal for anglers chasing smallmouth bass.

For first-time floaters, hiring a shuttle through one of the local outfitters is the easy move. They'll drop you off, leave your vehicle at the take-out, and let you focus on the river. If you're a seasoned paddler with your own setup, the public access points are well-marked.

Visit War Eagle Mill

War Eagle Mill, just outside Hindsville, is the kind of place that justifies a half-day on its own. The current mill is the fourth on the site since 1832 — the others were claimed by fire and flood — and it's still grinding grain the old way, with water-powered stone burrs. Visitors can watch the milling process, buy stone-ground flours and mixes in the on-site store, and eat at the Bean Palace restaurant on the second floor, where the view of the creek and the millwheel is worth the drive on its own. Each October, the surrounding fields host the War Eagle Craft Fair, one of the oldest and largest craft fairs in the central United States.

Drive the Pig Trail Scenic Byway

Highway 23 through southern Madison County is officially the Pig Trail Scenic Byway, and it's one of the prettier mountain drives in Arkansas. The route twists through the Boston Mountains, passing through Combs and continuing south into the Ozark National Forest. On a fall weekend the hardwoods light up and the road fills with motorcyclists, leaf-peepers, and locals taking the slow way home. Pack a lunch and pull over at one of the overlooks; there's no rush.

Hunt and Fish the Surrounding Country

Madison County and the surrounding region are some of the best hunting country in Arkansas — deer, turkey, small game, and increasingly, bear. Several state Wildlife Management Areas are within easy reach of the county, and the Ozark National Forest covers a huge swath of the southern half of Madison County. Locals tend to be private about their honey holes, but a chat at a local feed store will usually point you toward a guide or outfitter who can help.

For anglers, the Kings River, War Eagle Creek, and the upper White River system offer excellent smallmouth bass and goggle-eye fishing. The White River below Beaver Dam is some of the best trout water in the country and is only a short drive west of Madison County.

Hike the Ozark Highlands Trail

The Ozark Highlands Trail is a 250+ mile footpath that runs across northern Arkansas, and several of its most beautiful sections are within easy reach of Madison County. The southern portions of the county touch the Boston Mountains and the Ozark National Forest, where day-hike and overnight options abound. For a quick day trip, the trail's segments near the Mulberry River and the Whitaker Point (Hawksbill Crag) area in nearby Newton County are spectacular — and the drive from Huntsville is about an hour.

Explore the Buffalo National River Headwaters

The northern edge of Madison County sits very close to the headwaters of the Buffalo National River, the first federally designated National River in the United States. The upper Buffalo is wild country — narrow, fast in spring, and packed with the kind of scenery that draws photographers and paddlers from all over the world. Public access points are well-documented, and several outfitters in Jasper and Ponca handle shuttles and rentals for both float trips and backcountry trips.

Wrap Up

Madison County rewards people who take their time. The river will be there next weekend; the trail won't move; the mill will still be grinding. The unhurried pace is part of what makes the place worth visiting — and worth staying. Whether you're here for a day or considering settling down for good, the outdoors in Madison County is one of its most quietly powerful selling points.
